Quilting wasn’t even my idea, it was my husband’s!
Hi! I am Krista Russell, the pattern designer and long arm quilter behind Timeless Quilt Studio.
My quilting journey began with my second wedding anniversary. I decided that cloth napkins in our wedding colours were a must for our cotton anniversary. I didn’t know how to sew, didn’t have a sewing machine, and had no one to make them for me. What is a woman to do, but go buy a sewing machine!
My husband and I went shopping at the local quilt store which happens to be a block away from our home. While I was busy with machine demos, my husband was looking at all the quilts on display. On our way home, machine in hand, my husband informed he needed a quilt after those napkins were made. I did some research and found Melanie Hamm’s first quilt tutorial. I was hooked with that first quilt!
I quickly realized large quilts were difficult to work with after quilting my second (90”x110” quilt on my little 6” throat space machine. I had problem. At this point, I had a growing list of quilts I wanted to design. My husband and I talked about my options and he encouraged my to get my own long arm. A couple months later we were setting up a Grace Q’Nique 21x elite and a twelve foot frame.
My first quilts were a variety of blocks that I wanted to try out. Half Square Triangles, Disappearing 9 patch, and Log Cabin. That gave way to more modern inspirations of pixelated quilts and blocks that look like objects - mugs, butterflies, feathers, flowers. I started to really develop a taste for the more modern look with a bit of traditional mixed in. My quilting preferences gave way to the idea of my quilt patterns being “timeless”. Timeless Quilt Studio was born.
In my early learning stages, I discovered that people often named their quilts and some had meaning based on the history of the quilt blocks they chose. I wanted all my quilts to have story and some deeper meaning behind them.
As a recipient of a graduation quilt from my grandma, I have special appreciation for the time and love she put into my quilt. She passed away before I started quilting and at the time I never thought to talk to her more about quilting and the quilts she made. I do know Grandma liked trying different patterns and wanted each of her grandkids to have a quilt with their high school graduation. My “Grandma Quilt” will always help me remember the precious times I had with her.
Many of you may be the only quilter in your family, I am the only one in mine. I love the tradition of gifting quilts to mark special occasions. I also want those quilts to encourage the recipient through the pattern and the colour/fabric choices I make.
In addition to being a sentimental quilter, I do have an adventurous side. I come from an entrepreneurial family. I have two businesses - a piano studio and a quilt studio. My husband and I also enjoy riding motorcycles, snowboarding, and hiking in the mountains.
